Description of Practice
James Brusslan is an environmental attorney who has been practicing law for over twenty years. Martindale Hubbell, which evaluates attorneys, awarded Mr. Brusslan its highest "AV" rating, and in 2005, Law and Politics named him a "Super Lawyer." His litigation experience and knowledge of the law sets him apart from most environmental attorneys. His clients have included Commonwealth Edison, CB Richard Ellis, Nissan Forklift, USAA Reality, and several developers and real estate firms. In his litigation practice, he has earned victories for his clients in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois and the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. He is familiar with state and federal environmental laws, regulations and remediation standards.
Mr. Brusslan has handled matters for a wide variety of corporate clients and real estate firms. He has also represented a number of cities and citizen groups in upholding environmental and zoning laws. In 1997, he was counsel of record case before the United States Supreme Court. He also played a significant role in cases involving radioactive thorium in West Chicago and a radio tower in a wetlands area. On behalf of Commonwealth Edison, he convinced a court to deny entry of several consent decrees in a CERCLA case and successfully obtained a judgment awarding his client its cleanup costs. He currently represents a variety of developers and homeowners in matters involving Illinois lakes and the Chicago River.
