Background

Payne Mallory is, at this writing, 22 years old. She owns the Chrome Babylon nightclub in Indianapolis; a place equally known for the audacity of their exotic dancers and the quality of the bartending staff. No cover, no minimum, though they do of course encourage you to buy drinks. Payne herself is known (in the proper circles) as the main heiress to the Rudd fortune: her foster father, Anselm Rudd, having passed on in the last year and left her his controlling interests and properties. There is another Mallory sister, Gloria; she inherited the European interests, and lives there.

Payne, the senior of the Misses Mallory, is unmarried, with (the gossip columnists know) no obvious plans of becoming otherwise. She seldom attends public events, but when she does it's always on the arm of a different man.
