Background

Io was born in Hillfields Hold in Keroon, up in the mountains. Her entire family (a large one) was runner-mad, both her mother and father being trained Herders. Her mother only made it partway through Prenticeship before meeting and falling in love with her father, and giving up the Craft to bear him many strong children - and bear she did. Fifteen alive before she finally hit the Change. Io is the seventh from the top. She also didn't see what everyone else saw in runners.

Just about the only relative (and nobody but relatives lived at Hillfields) who Io got along well with was her Uncle Rion, whose specialty was the little woolly sort of herdbeast. She used to go out with him and help him care for the flock (therefore getting out of the more onerous, to her, chores back at homehold). It was from him that she heard the great stories of legend, and he who encouraged her to draw. She began playing with fibers and how to fasten, knot, and weave them together; among others she began experimenting with the long shed hairs from runners' tails.

At sixteen Turns, her family finally, reluctantly, agreed to let her go to Boll to 'prentice with the Weavers; and with that a whole new chapter of her life began.

At the Hall, she met many new people, and all the skills that earned her scorn at home, were useful at Weaver. She relaxed, thriving in the new environment ... and got her first youthful crush on a fellow apprentice, Rutger of Telgar. They both made Senior Apprentice, and were posted to Fort Weyr. Harmless enough; they were simply good friends, until a dragonrider's green firelizard rose right in the apprentice dorms. The overwhelming new feelings crashed past their holdbound morals, and they just couldn't help but join in. Even that would have been harmless enough, so long as the Masters never found out; unfortunately, Io inherited her mother's great fecundity, and became pregnant. She never even knew until one rainy night, coming back a-dragonback from a supply trip to the Hall (all out of good-quality leather, and three commissions pending), the stress to her system was too extreme, and she lost the child. The Weyrhealer told the Weyrwoman, who told the Craftmaster ... and Io was posted to far Ista as soon as she recovered enough. Rutger was sent home to Telgar to serve the Journeymen there.

Io spent the next four Turns at Ista recovering, both physically and emotionally; and working to regain her lost Senior Apprentice status. Finally she was brought back to the main Hall, though Rutger had decided to remain at Telgar. She was promoted to Journeyman not too long after, and has so remained since; wedded to her Craft, blood and bone.
