The Triad Radio Collective provides the most esoteric--and
one of the most popular--treatments of the progressive/underground format
five nights per week on WXFM. Each moment of Triad's air time is
meticulously programmed in advance, with segments topically oriented.
These segments generally amount to a coalessence of rock, electronic sounds,
jazz, folk, and just about anything else judged artisticaly valid by
programmer Saul Smaizys. In addition, Triad has developed a regular core of
features such as "Chicago Music Scene," a valuable piece of boosterism;
"Sounds From Across the Big Swamp," emphasizing recent imported
recordings; "Flight 106," an hour of uninterrupted music to begin each of
Triad's five evenings; and "Rockin' Symphony, " providing examples of
peaceful co-existance between rock and classical musicians. The complete
month's program schedule is available in the Triad Guide, Which has evolved
into a full-fledged monthly magazine available free at retail outlets. Triad
entertains momentary flights into the world of space rock, the avant-garde,
electronic music, and schedules regular inspirational lectures by Alan Watts
and Sri Chinmoy. Their orientation is towards those who take music
seriously. (Triad Radio on WXFM, 106FM Stereo; Monday and Wednesday
through Friday from 8 until 1 am; Tuesday beginning at 9.)
